he pārtha (O son of Pṛthā!),
aśraddhayā (without faith) yat (that which) hutam (offered in sacrifice) dattam (given in charity) tapaḥ (austerity) taptam (undergone) kṛtaṁ ca (and done) [asti] (it is),
[tat] asat iti (that non-existence) ucyate (it is called),
tat na iha (that not here) na ca pretya (and not after death) [phalati] (it gives fruit).

tat kasmād asad ity ucyate śṛṇu he pārtha | co hetau | yasmāt tad-aśraddhākṛtaṃ na pretya para-loke phalati viguṇatvenāpūrvājanakatvāt | no iha nāpīha loke yaśaḥ sādhubhir ninditatvāt | ata aihikāmuṣmika-phala-vikalatvād aśraddhā-kṛtasya sāttvikyā śraddhayaiva sāttvikaṃ yajñādi kuryād antaḥ-karaṇa-śuddhaye | tādṛśasyaiva śraddhā-pūrvakasya sāttvikasya yajñāder daivād vaiguṇya-śaṅkāyāṃ brahmaṇo nāma-nirdeśena sādguṇyaṃ sampādanīyam iti paramārthaḥ | śraddhā-pūrvakam asāttvikam api yajñādi viguṇaṃ brahmaṇo nāma-nirdeśena sāttvikaṃ sa-guṇaṃ ca sampāditaṃ bhavatīti bhāṣyam |
